India and United States Intensify Efforts to Finalise Interim Bilateral Trade Agreement
United States Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer's visit to New Delhi marked a crucial phase in negotiations for the India-United States Bilateral Trade Agreement. Discussions with Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal focused on market access, digital trade, supply chain resilience, and an interim deal aimed at strengthening the Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.
According to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Ambassador Jamieson Greer held multiple rounds of discussions with Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal. The leaders conducted a comprehensive review of the core elements of the Bilateral Trade Agreement, focusing on enhanced market access, digital trade, supply chain resilience, reduction of non-tariff barriers, and expanded cooperation in strategic sectors.
The Ministry stated that both sides acknowledged substantial progress achieved by negotiating teams in recent months and welcomed the momentum generated through successive technical and ministerial-level engagements. Discussions concentrated on pathways to conclude an interim agreement, which is being viewed as an important milestone toward a comprehensive Bilateral Trade Agreement.
India and the United States reaffirmed their commitment to reaching an agreement that is balanced, commercially meaningful, and capable of delivering tangible benefits to businesses, farmers, workers, and consumers in both countries. Both sides underscored the importance of ensuring that the agreement serves the interests of key stakeholders while strengthening economic cooperation.
Recognising the increasing importance of the India-United States economic partnership amid evolving global trade dynamics, both countries reiterated their shared objective of expanding bilateral trade, promoting innovation, and developing resilient and trusted supply chains. The Ministry noted that both sides expressed confidence that ongoing negotiations would further deepen economic ties and reinforce the India-United States Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.
